General requirements for a Schengen Visa

A Schengen visa enables a foreign national to enter the Schengen area. The following countries form part of the Schengen area: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. With a Schengen visa you can travel freely between these countries as long as the Schengen visa is valid.

As of Tuesday 6th May 2008 all Schengen visa applications for Denmark, Iceland and Norway will be processed by the Swedish Embassy in Dublin.  Please note that visa applications handed in before this date will still be processed by respective Embassy.

All visa applications will be consulted before the visa is issued.

A visa gives the opportunity to enter the Schengen area and not a legal right.

It is recommended you apply in the period that lies between three (03) weeks and three (03) months prior to entry to the Schengen area.

Who decides my case?
In most cases the Embassy decides whether to grant a visa. If the Embassy is not sure what position to take on an application, it passes the case on to the Migration Board in respective country for a decision.

How long does it take?
The waiting period for a visa is approximately 10 working days.

What if my application is turned down?
You cannot appeal against a decision to turn down an application for a visa. You can however re-apply or request that the original application be reconsidered. In that case you write in and request a review of the decision. You send the letter to the body that took the original decision.

Remember!
Make sure you are properly insured so that you are covered for any costs associated with an illness, accident, etc.
