Let the Right One In Premieres at Tribeca Film Festival

The feature film Let the Right One In, directed by Tomas Alfredson and based on the bestselling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, makes its US premiere with a week-long run at the Tribeca Film Festival, starting April 24.

Equal parts coming-of-age story and vampire tale, Let the Right One In is a supernatural drama adapted from John Ajvide Lindqvist's bestselling novel Let Me In, published by Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Press.

The plot centers around twelve-year-old Oskar, who lives in a drab suburb of Stockholm. By day he's the victim of relentless bullying and by night he dreams of revenge. Oskar fills a notebook with news on the gruesome killings that have set neighborhood nerves on edge – someone is tying people up, breaking their necks, and draining their blood – and rehearses knife moves in the icy courtyard of his apartment complex. One night, an apparition appears on the decaying jungle gym behind him: Eli, the new girl next door. The two misfits befriend each other, she coaching him in bravery, he awakening her hunger for love. But Eli, as it turns out, craves something more – blood.

In this remarkable film, the fantastic becomes the everyday stuff of life.  Alfredson handles the plot's gory elements with restrained precision, and the eerie stillness of the scenes makes them shudderingly memorable. Dark themes prevail, yet the essence of the film lies mainly in the relationship between Oskar and Eli, played by talented young actors Kåre Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson. Despite the gloomy storyline, the two emit a natural innocence and a constant sense of hope.
