Folk Costume Details

In Sweden, at weddings, official events, on holidays – especially Midsummer – one often sees traditional folk costumes being worn by men, women and children.

Each region has its own unique patterns for headgear, aprons, cloth bags, jewelry, vests and skirts.

Folk Costume Details is a one-of-a-kind exhibit created by Helena Hernmarck specifically for the American Swedish Institute and their new building in Minneapolis, MN.

The design of the large tapestry is based on details from various Swedish folk costumes: a skirt from Delsbo in Hälsingland, a cloth bag from Boda in Dalarna, etc.

A companion documentary by Tommy Hellström follows the creation of the tapestry.
