Per Olov Enquist is one of Sweden's most celebrated contemporary writers. His novels, plays, and short stories have been published in 26 countries, and he has received countless awards for his work. Since his literary debut in 1961, P.O. Enquist's work has won him worldwide acclaim as a writer with a unique style and a particular interest in historical fiction. Most recently, his novel The Book About Blanche and Marie (published in English in 2006) was nominated for the International Impac Dublin Literary Award. P.O. Enquist achieved an international breakthrough with the publication of his novel The Royal Physician's Visit in 1999 (2002 in English). The book won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2003 and was also shortlisted for the Impac Dublin Award. That same year he published his first children's book, Three Cave Mountain (2007 in English), which was awarded the prestigious Luchs Prize for the best children's book of the year in Germany. P.O. Enquist has also written numerous screenplays, most notably for the films Pelle the Conqueror and Hamsun.Enquist's success as a novelist is matched by his renown as a playwright. Nearly 200 productions of his plays have been staged around the world, including an award-winning Broadway production of The Night of the Tribades in 1977 with a legendary cast of Bibi Andersson, Dame Eileen Atkins and Max von Sydow. His most recent play produced in the U.S. was The Image Maker, directed by Ingmar Bergman at BAM in 1999. Tiina Nunnally has translated over 40 books from the Scandinavian languages into English, including four by P.O. Enquist.
