Consular assistance

The Embassy of Sweden to Iraq can only provide limited assistance to Swedish citizens in Iraq in case of emergencies.

Due to the security situation, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs strongly advices Swedish citizens and holders of Swedish residence permits against travelling to Iraq. Those already present in Iraq should leave the country.

In case of emergency you can reach the Embassy during office hours by phone +964 77 00 897015. Out of office hours you can call the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' officer on duty on phone +46 8 405 5001.

Please be informed that a person who has placed him/herself in a difficult position (travelled abroad against the Ministry's advice, travelled without a return ticket or valid passport and visa etc.) can not count on automatically receiving consular help and/or economic aid from the Embassy.

In certain cases the Embassy can help you with:

  • advice on how to transfer money from Sweden
  • contacting relatives in an emergency
  • advice about lawyer, doctor and translator and if needed contact them

What the Embassy can not help you with:

  • currency exchange or other bank services
  • hotel and ticket reservation
  • paying debts, fines or bail

Who can receive help?

  • Swedish citizens living in Sweden
  • Refugees or stateless persons living in Sweden

In certain cases a foreign citizen living in Sweden can receive help. This applies also to a Swedish citizen that does not live in Sweden.
