Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation

Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation Mr. Bernard Shaw received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. The prize money was donated to the newly created Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation (ASLF). The patron of the foundation is the King of Sweden and the trustees include the Swedish Ambassador.

The purpose of the ASLF is 'the encouragement of cultural intercourse between Sweden and the British Islands through the promotion and diffusion of knowledge and appreciation of Swedish culture in the British
Islands'.

In 1991 the ASLF instituted the Bernard Shaw Translation Prize, and it was first presented to Tom Geddes for his translation of Torgny Lindgren's The Way of a Serpent. The ₤2,000 prize is awarded every three years to a translator, for the best translation into English of a Swedish work, published for the first time by a UK publisher. The prize is administered by the Society of Authors.

Donations are given to:

  • The Swedish English Language
    Translators' Association (SELTA) and its journal Swedish Book Review
  • The Society of Authors for the
    administration of the Bernard Shaw Translation Prize.
  • An annual book prize awarded to
    deserving students studying Swedish at a British university.

Financial support can be applied for in respect of:

  • English translation of Swedish
    literature
  • Travel grants to British translators for visiting Sweden, and for Swedish writers coming to Britain
  • Funds can also be made available for the translation of works within other art forms.
  • Applications for financial support should be sent to the address below and must be received by 1 May or 1 November 2008.
