General Visa Information

General information on how to apply for a visa is found below. For further information on each type of visa, please refer to the links to the right. All persons wishing to apply for a visa to visit Sweden must make an appointment before attending and submitting their documents. Applying for a visa
You must apply in person at the Embassy of Sweden to lodge your application. If you are not a resident of the UK you should apply at the Embassy in your country of residence. In countries where there is no Swedish diplomatic mission, Sweden is represented by another Schengen state. These countries are listed here.

Please note that holders of Schengen visas are still subject to immigration control and are not guaranteed entry into any of the Schengen countries, even though they may hold a valid visa for these countries.

  • Please bring photocopies of both your passport (photo page and UK-permit page) and of those original documents that you wish to keep (i.e. marriage certificate, bankstatement). Remember that the Embassy does not return any documents.
  • Please bring a pre-paid recorded delivery envelope from the post office with you as we will return all passports by post. Otherwise a postage fee (£5) will be charged.
  • Depending on your status in the UK, the processing time of your visa could vary from 7 to 60 days. Your application should be lodged at the Embassy at least 14 days before the proposed journey is undertaken.
  • Applicant of an EU/EEA-spouse should bring the passport of the spouse and original Marriage Certificate.
  • Your UK permit must be endorsed in your passport and should be valid for another three months after your departure from the Schengen area.

Where to apply for a Schengen visa
If you want to visit one Schengen country, apply for a visa at the Embassy of that country. If you want to visit several Schengen countries, apply at the Embassy of the country of your main destination. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination, apply at the Embassy of the Schengen country of your first port of entry.

How to make an appointment
All persons wishing to apply for a visa to visit Sweden must make an appointment before attending and submitting their documents. The automated 24 hrs phone number to call is 09065-540 710 (£1.-/min). You can also request an appointment by writing to the Embassy of Sweden, Visa Section, 11 Montagu Place, London W1H 2AL. Please enclose a copy of your passport, UK permit and a self-addressed stamped envelope for your appointment confirmation letter.

How long is a visa valid?
Visas are granted for a maximum of 90 days at a time. Only in exceptional cases are applicants granted a visa for a visit of more than 90 days’ duration, but never for longer than a year.

Where is a visa valid?
An entry visa is normally valid in all the Schengen countries. In exceptional cases a visa may be granted solely for entry into the country that issued it. A visa granted for longer than 90 days is only valid for entering and staying in Sweden.

Schengen visas are issued by Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. 

Cost of visa
The equivalent of €60 (at present £48).The fee is payable on submission of the visa application and
non-refundable. Payment should be made in cash or by postal order.

There is no visa fee for the following applicants:

  • children under 6 years of age
  • school pupils, students and accompanying teachers on study or educational trips
  • researchers
  • for EU/EEA-spouses and their children (under 21), registered partners and co-habitees of EU/EEA nationals (does not apply for co-habitees of Swiss citizens). The original Marriage Certificate or original full Birth Certificate with parents' names must be submitted together with spouse's/parent's original passport.

The previous fee of €35 (£28) will remain in force for citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Moldova.
