Statement by Mr. Christoffer Berg, Councellor at the Permanent Mission of Sweden

During the presentation by the High Commissioner for Human rights of her annual report, Sweden made the following intervention prising the High Commissioners focus on the relation between lack of respect for human rights and poverty.

Thank you President.

My delegation associates itself with the statement made yesterday on behalf of the European Union.

Mme High Commissioner,

Sweden welcomes the timely focus your Office is putting on the fight against poverty and the widespread violations of economic and social rights.

Sweden fully acknowledges the link between Development, Security and Human rights.

In fulfilling the Millenium Development Goals all of us have made a number of commitments in relation to Human rights. The contribution by the OHCHR to the efforts by Governments and the UN to reach these Goals are therefore very important.

In fighting poverty the respect for each individuals economic and social rights are, in the view of my Government, just as important as civil and political rights.

Empowerment of the poor through participation in the political process, accountability by Government and non-discrimination in the execution of economic and social policies are keys to our combined efforts.

Could the High Commissioner elaborate on the efforts by her Office in these regards and is there in the view of the High Commissioner a way in which the Human rights Council could contribute to support these efforts?

Thank you Mme High Commissioner and thank you President.
