Northern Realms: A Showcase of Traditional and New Music

Scandinavia House presents a showcase of traditional and new music from the Nordic regions, including three acts from Sweden, on January 14.

Audiences and critics have praised the tremendous live performances by Swedish guitarists David Hansson and Thomas Hansy of TheGothenburgCombo – who have been called a "chamber music knockout" – for combining extreme virtuosity with deep feeling, humor, and maximum communication with the audience.  They were the 2004 first prize winners in "13ème Concours International de Guitare en Duo," the world's biggest duo competition for guitarists.

Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin of Wildbirds and Peacedrums build their music on vocals and drums, expanding it with electronic devices and instruments such as the sitar and the glockenspiel.  A provocative mix of spiritual pop, free blues, and raw soul music makes them one of Sweden’s most interesting bands.

Lelo Nika, a master accordionist mixing styles from Balkan Gypsy tradition to the jazz world, and Niklas Sivelöv, a prominent classical pianist in Scandinavia and master improviser in the style of Mozart or Bach, mix their two worlds in the Niklas Sivelöv & Lelo Nika Duo’s extraordinarily free musical approach.
