How to apply for a Residence Permit as a Co-Applicant

If you are planning to move to Sweden to live for a limited period of time with your husband/wife/ partner or parent who is working in Sweden, you should apply for a residence permit before you go to Sweden.

You can apply for a residence permit at the Consulate General of Sweden in Guangzhou. You may be interviewed after you have presented your application. When the Consulate has all the necessary documentation, your case may be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board.

The Consulate will inform you when the decision is ready. If you are granted residence permit it will be entered into your passport. You cannot travel to Sweden and wait for the decision there.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application (note that all documents must be submitted in original)

If your husband/wife/partner is in Sweden:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.

  • Three passport photos taken within the past six months against a white background.

  • A valid passport and two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. Please note that even if you are not yet a holder of a valid passport it is possible to apply for a residence permit. You can forward your passport to the Consulate later.

  • Notary Certificate of marriage (Chinese and English version) and a copy of the certificate, or two copies of a Swedish marriage certificate (vigselbevis) if you were married in Sweden. If you have been married before, you are required to enclose a Notary Certificate of the divorce (Chinese and English version) in two copies. If you are not married, you are required to enclose a Notary Certificate stating that you are single (Chinese and English version) in two copies.

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of your husband's/wife's/partner's passport.

  • Two photocopies of your husband's/wife's/partner's Civil Registration Certificate, "personbevis".

  • A letter of invitation from your husband/wife/partner. (Orignial and one copy.)

  • Letter of introduction from your current employer in China. This should state if you have been granted leave for the time you will be in Sweden, and it should be signed and have the telephone number of the person who signed it. (Orignial and one copy.)

You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee is currently 1150 RMB.

Note: Co- applicants to self-employees must show that they have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the first year in Sweden. This sum is estimated to 3500 SEK for adults and 1750 SEK for children per month.


For children (under 18 years old) with one or both parents in Sweden, or children accompanying a parent to Sweden

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.

  • Three passport photos taken within the past six months against a white background.

  • A valid passport and two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. Please note that even if you are not yet a holder of a valid passport it is possible to apply for residence permit. You can forward your passport to the Embassy later.

  • Notary Certificate stating the relationship of the child/parents. (Original and one copy.)

  • Notary Certificate stating who has the legal custody of the child and in case only one of the parents has the right of access to the child. (Original and one copy.)

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of the passport of the parent/s.

  • Two photocopies of the Civil Registration Certificate, "personbevis", of the parent/s.

  • If one of the child's parents will stay in China, a letter from him/her is requested stating that he/she is aware of the child's application for residence permit and that he/she agrees that the child goes to Sweden. (Original and one copy.)

  • Letter of invitation from the parent in Sweden. (Orginial and one copy.)

  • Letter of introduction from the school in China. This should state if the school has granted leave for the time the child will be in Sweden, and must be signed and have the telephone number of the person who signed it. (Original and one copy.)

All the notaries must be authenticated by the local provincial Foreign Affairs Office.

You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee for children under 18 years old is currently 580 RMB.

If you fail to supply the necessary documents mentioned above, the decision-making process of your case may be delayed. The Consulate may call you for additional documents or information if necessary.
