Sweden and UNCTAD
Sweden regards the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development as an important forum for discussions on trade issues of particular significance to developing countries and has thus taken an active part in its sessions. UNCTAD IX, held in South Africa in 1996, provided an opportunity to revitalize and reform the organization in order better to serve its member states in a world that has changed considerably since UNCTAD was created in 1964. Sweden played a leading role in this effort. The result was gratifying and UNCTAD will hopefully be better placed to deal with its important issues in the future.
