EEA and EFTA

After accession to the EU, Sweden still remains a party to the European Economic Area (EEA) agreement, which now serves as an important basis for the economic relations of all EU countries with Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland. The EEA agreement went into effect in 1994, extending many aspects of the EU single market to the EFTA countries, except Switzerland.

When it joined the EU, Sweden left EFTA after 35 years of membership. EFTA had previously achieved its objective of creating a common free trade area for industrial products throughout Western Europe.
