The Swedish Institute in Alexandria

For centuries, Sweden has had many and varied contacts with the Middle East and North Africa region. In recent years, the relation with the region has taken on new dimensions. Through immigration, people and cultures of the region have become part of the Swedish society.

In 1997, the Swedish government initiated a study on the establishment of a Swedish Institute in Alexandria. The motive was to develop a means to increase contacts and cooperation with the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

The Swedish Institute in Alexandria is dedicated to the dialogue of civilizations. When Sweden joined the European Union in 1995, leading diplomats, scholars, and politicians displayed a strong commitment to promoting intercultural understanding. It was felt that Sweden could - and should - contribute to rebuilding the trust between the peoples of Europe and the Arab world.

The Institute was established in October 2000 as an autonomous mission within the Swedish Foreign Service, following an agreement between the governments of Sweden and Egypt.
