First-time Passport Application for Child

All passport applicants must visit the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa to be digitally photographed and fingerprinted on site at the time of the application. Children under 6 years of age are excempted from fingerprints. All applicants are requested to make an appointment at the Embassy by telephone or e-mail.

Applicants who were born outside of Sweden and have never before had a Swedish passport must first be added to the Swedish population register by applying for a coordination number.

This application can be filed at all Swedish Consulates in Canada. Instructions for how to obtain a coordination number can be found under Contents on the right hand side of this page.

Once the coordination number (samordningsnummer) has been obtained and the child has been added to the population register, you can apply for a passport at the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa. 

The child must be accompanied by a legal guardian and bring the following when applying for a new passport:

  • Written concent of both parents, on a separate form Bilaga till passansökan which may be downloaded from the righthand column of this page.

    if legal custody has been granted to one parent or to another person, legal proof of guardianship must be submitted with the application.

  • For children under 18 born outside Sweden, an official Birth Certificate showing the names of both parents.

  • if only the father is a Swedish citizen, parent's marriage certificate

  • Passports, or other valid photo ID with clearly visible signature of both legal guardians, or notarized copy thereof.

  • Original documentation proving Canadian resident status (valid visa or Permanent Resident Card) of Swedish parent(s), or notarized copy of same.

    If the parent(s) gained Canadian citizenship before July 1, 2001, documentation from the Swedish Migration Board must be provided to certify that he and/or she has regained Swedish citizenship.

The new passport is normally ready in approximately 2 weeks from the time of application.  It must be picked up in person by a legal guardian or by the applicant, if she or he is 15 or older. The passport may be picked up at the Embassy or any Swedish Consulate in Canada.
