Renewal of Passport for Adults 18 or Older

All passport applicants must visit the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa to be digitally photographed on site at the time of the application. Applicants are requested to make an appointment at the Embassy by telephone or e-mail.

Applicants 18 years or older who have previously had a Swedish passport should bring the following documents when applying for a new passport:

  • The old passport, valid or expired

    Please note: An application for a legal change of name may not be submitted along with a passport application.  Contact the Swedish Tax Authority to apply for a name change before applying for a new passport.

  • Proof of status in Canada

    1) If you became a landed immigrant in Canada before July 1, 1998, and have not applied for Canadian citizenship a "non-record letter" is required. This is obtained by doing a "Search of Citizenship Records" at Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

    Please note that if you have received the new "Permanent Resident Card" a "non-record letter" is not required. Instead present your card; or

    2) If you became a landed immigrant in Canada after July 1, 1998, your landed immigrant document is required; or

    3) If you have acquired Canadian citizenship by application AFTER July 1, 2001, your Canadian Citizenship Certificate indicating the exact date that the citizenship was acquired, or proof that you have a pending citizenship application; or

    4) If you have acquired Canadian citizenship by application BEFORE July 1, 2001, and you have applied to regain your Swedish citizenship present the Swedish Citizenship Certificate; or

    5) If you are in Canada on a permit with limited validity such as "employment authorization, student authorization, visitor's record" or such  present this permit; or

    6) If you were born in Canada (or any other country - not Sweden) and obtained your Swedish Citizenship from one of your parents and you are over the age of 18, proof that you can retain your Swedish citizenship (an application to retain Swedish citizenship can be made on your 18th birthday and MUST be done before the age of 22);

  • Fee:

    Application fee of $76 in the form of cash or a money order, payable to the Embassy of Sweden. 

    Do not bring passport photos.  As part of the new procedure, all applicants are digitally photographed on site at the time of the application.

    The new passport is normally ready 1-2 weeks from the time of application.  The new passport may be picked up at any Swedish consulate in Canada. 

    For pick-up of the new passport at a consular location  there is a shipping fee of $19 (payable at time of application) and an additional processing fee of $12 (payable at pick-up).

All documents must be presented in the original at the time of application.

Remember it is up to the applicant to prove his/her Swedish citizenship and to obtain all required documents. For minors there must be proof that one or both parents were Swedish citizens at the time the child was born.
