Swedish-Turkish Scholarships for master's studies and research

Sweden has a long history of academic exellence, with universities dating back to the 15th century. Currently there are 48 accredited institutions of higher education in Sweden.

The Swedish Institute in co-operation with the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul, announces a number of scholarships for master level programmes taught in English and research grants at universities, university colleges and research institutions in Sweden for the academic year 2010/2011. There are at this point about 600 master's programmes taught entirely in English at Swedish universities. Most of them cover two years (120 ETCS).

Master's Programmes

Since 2002, 20-30 Turkish students are awarded scholarships annually for master's studies in Sweden within the Swedish-Turkish programme. Scholarships are given within the field of social sciences with priority to the following areas:  

  • Economics/Management
  • Democracy/Human rights/Gender issues
  • Law
  • European studies (EU)
  • Environmental science/Sustainability studies
  • Social work/social issues

A prerequisite for applying to a master's level programme is that you have completed a three-year bachelor degree (180 higher education credits).

Postgraduate studies, Part of PhD studies and research

Grants are provided for postgraduate studies, part of PhD studies or research. In order to be considered for a research grant you have to be registered at a Turkish university or research institution, and have an invitation from a Swedish university department or research institution.

The letter of invitation should be enclosed to your application. Applications should be made directly online at www.studyinsweden.se. Deadline for applying is 1st February 2010.

Swedish-Turkish Scholarship for Human Rights Law in memory of Anna Lindh

Turkish students who have been accepted to a master's level programme or to do research in Human Rights Law at a Swedish university are eligible for the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship for Human Rights Law.

Master's programmes in Human Rights Law is currently provided by the Falculty of Law at Lund university in cooperation with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights.

The application procedure is the same as for master's level programmes and research respectively.

English proficiency

Universities and university colleges require that skills in English are documented by an international proficiency test (TOEFL - approx. 550 p, computer-based TOEFL 213 p, IELTS, MELAB, Cambridge First Certificate).

Financial conditions

At present scholarships are SEK 8000 (appr. 800 Euro) per month for master's studies and SEK 12000 (1200 Euro) per month for holders of a PhD degree, plus travel costs to and from Sweden. Each scholarship is designed to cover the living expenses of one person only. There are no grants for family members.

The scholarship holder is insured by the Swedish Institute against illness and accidents during the scholarship period.

The Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Programme is part of the Swedish Institute Scholarship Programmes.
