Peter Asplund Quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Sweden's Peter Asplund Quartet performs as part of the annual Northern Lights Series presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center on January 7.

Peter Asplund Quartet is one of Sweden's premier jazz groups.  The quartet features Jacob Karlzon on piano, Hans Andersson on bass, Johan Löfkrantz Ramsay on drums, and band leader Peter Asplund on trumpet.  Asplund has established himself both locally and internationally, playing in small combos as well as big bands in clubs, concert halls and festivals throughout Scandinavia, the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Australia, Poland, Switzerland and the former Yugoslavia.

The group's 2004 LP release Lochiel's Warning was hailed as an "instant classic" and considered by many Swedish critics to be the jazz album of the year, if not one of the best Swedish albums of all time.  The quartet has also been honored with several prestigious distinctions including Manifestpriset, an alternative Grammy awarded by the Swedish Organization for Independent Record Labels (SOM), which called Lochiel’s Warning "a sparkling piece of collective jazz craftmanship based on strong original material and well chosen standards beyond all clichés."  The jury also praised Asplund's "extraordinary relationship with the inner soul of music" and his "exquisite technique and true passion."

The Northern Lights Series at Jazz at Lincoln Center is in its second installment and features performances by distinguished jazz artists from the Nordic countries.
