Pippi is a fresh retelling of the classic Pippi Longstocking tales by Astrid Lindgren, adapted for the stage by award-winning playwright Zakiyyah Alexander. The production features nearly two dozen all new, hand-made marionettes crafted by puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage. In addition to the brilliant artistry of the production, kids and families will enjoy the incredible adventures of quick-witted and super-strong Pippi as she overcomes bullies and burglars, all while fending off social conventions that threaten to prevent her friends from being creative. The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre was imported to the U.S. in 1876 as Sweden’s exhibit for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The enchanting Swedish architecture and craftsmanship of the structure, suggestive of a model schoolhouse, caught the eye of Fredrick Law Olmsted, who brought it to Central Park in 1877. Since 1973, it has been the home of a permanent theater, specifically designed and constructed for marionette performances. The current production celebrates the centennial of the birth of Astrid Lindgren, Sweden’s renowned author of the original Pippi Longstocking books, who was born on November 14, 1907.The Consulate General of Sweden in New York is a proud sponsor of this ongoing event.Swedish Cottage Marionette TheatreCentral Park at 79th Street and the West DriveTuesday-Friday at 10:30am and 12:00 noon Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm
