Torn or Damaged Passports

If a passport is torn or damaged, the passport holder is entitled to a new passport, with the same expiration date as the damaged passport.

Only passports with the following manufacturing defects will be replaced:

• the chip (manufacturing error)
• laser engraving
• photo error
• torn computer pages

The passport holder will not receive a free replacement passport if :

• the original has been damaged, e.g., the spine of the passport has been bent
• the original is threadbare
• the passport holder has been careless

Application instructions are the same as for a normal passport.

The new passport may be picked up at any Swedish consulate in the United States.

New passports are normally issued within 1-2 weeks from the time of application.  If you are traveling in the next few days and need a passport immediately, you may apply for a emergency (temporary) passport at any of the following consular locations:

  • Atlanta
  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Ft. Lauderdale
  • Houston
  • Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles
  • Minneapolis
  • New York
  • Raleigh
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco
  • Tampa
  • Washington DC

Always contact the consulates directly to confirm open hours, especially during the summer months. Contact information for all Swedish consulates in the US is available here

The fee for an emergency passport is $200.

For pickup of the new passport at a consular location other than the one at which the application was submitted, there is a shipping fee of $10 (payable at time of application) and an additional processing fee of $20 (payable at time of pickup).
