Carl Linnaeus Tercentenary Celebrations in Boston, New York and Washington

This year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of the great Swedish natural scientist Carl Linnaeus, and celebrations are taking place all over the world to commemorate him and his work.

As part of these worldwide events, the first edition of Linnaeus’ Systema Naturae from 1735 – with annotations by the scientist himself – will tour the U.S. East Coast from Boston to New York to Washington D.C.  Arranged by the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, the first part of the tour will include presentations at several world-class institutions, beginning with an invitation-only event at the Harvard Museum of Natural History in Boston on November 6.  Keynote speakers will include Dr. Edward O. Wilson of Harvard University, who first initiated the project Encyclopedia of Life for the continuing work of cataloging the species, and Dr. James Hanken, Director of Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology.

Systema Naturae will also be exhibited at a public event at The New York Public Library on November 7, where it will be presented by keynote speakers Dr. Edward O. Wilson and Professor Tore Frängsmyr of Uppsala University.

For the following three days, November 8-10, the book will be displayed at The New York Botanical Garden.  Keynote speakers at the event on November 8, by invitation only, will be Dr. Edward O. Wilson and Dr. Katarina Andreasen of Uppsala University.  On November 10, Robbin C. Moran, Ph.D. of The New York Botanical Garden and Professor Gunnar Broberg of Lund University will each give a public lecture on Linnaeus and his enduring legacy.

Lastly, the book will be presented at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC on November 13-14.
