Live Swedish Music in New York City

Several of Sweden's most exciting artists and musical acts perform live in New York in October, during or around the CMJ Music Marathon.

Sahara Hotnights touch down in New York for one night only, playing Bowery Ballroom on October 19.  The band, led by frontwoman Maria Andersson, is best known for its tight garage rock sound but has recently moved into more varied territory, influenced and inspired by Bryan Ferry and Stevie Nicks as much as by The Ramones and Blondie. Their latest album, What If Leaving Is A Loving Thing, was produced by Björn Yttling of Peter Björn and John.

Lo-Fi-Fnk, an electro-pop duo from Stockholm, play Europa in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on October 20.  Leo Drougge and August Hellsing have been setting indie dancefloors on fire with Daft Punk-inspired electro-pop, touring internationally with Simian Mobile Disco.

Shout Out Louds headline shows at Bowery Ballroom on October 25, Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 26, and Maxwell's in Hoboken on October 27.  The band plays up-beat, synth-infused indie pop and has been building international momentum in the past few years.  They are touring with Johnossi, an experimental rock duo from Stockholm, featuring guitarist/vocalist John and drummer Ossi, whose live shows feature acoustic guitar played through two amps, a heavy dose of effects and high-precision combat-style drumming.

Swedish indie pop favorite and Göteborg hometown hero Jens Lekman returns to New York to perform with a full backing band at Webster Hall on October 27 as well as solo at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 28.  Lekman is a crafty songwriter who manages to tug at heartstrings and emote deadpan irony in the same breath, currently on tour in support of his acclaimed new album, Night Falls Over Kortedala.
