Humanitarian Assistance for Somalia

Swedish humanitarian assistance is twofold: it aims to provide specific assistance in acute situations, but also provides annual voluntary contributions to international organisations working in Somalia.

The Swedish humanitarian assistance to Somalia reaches to the following areas:

  • food security (assessment of food security situation, livestock production, agricultural production and market processes)
  • operational health interventions (medicines, capacity building of health personnel)
  • water and sanitation,
  • education (material for primary schools)
  • reproductive health
  • implementation of the HIV/AIDS strategy
  • protection of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and children
  • coordination of humanitarian action
  • security of humanitarian staff to ensure continued humanitarian access

Annual voluntary contributions to organisations’ budgets 2006/2007
A total commitment of SEK 54,8 million has already been made for 2007 but the total humanitarian aid is expected to reach some SEK 100 million at the end of the year. Sweden also provided some SEK 72,94 million in 2006 as contributions to general budgets of various humanitarian organisations.
