Linnaeus in Niagara Falls

On May 16 the Tercentenary of Carl Linnaeus will be celebrated at the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture in Niagara Falls

Carl Linnaeus never travelled the world, but his seventeen disciples did. To America and Canada came Peter Kalm. During two years time he explored the eastern parts of America and New England. He also stayed for several months in Quebec, and, after several attempts managed to visit the Niagara Falls.

Peter Kalms impressions in America and Canada is very well described in his diaries, published in several editions as Travels Into North America. Not only does his books describe the plants, and animals he saw, but also very vividly explains how the people of New England and New France lived, and not least the differences between the two countries.

The celebrations in Niagara Falls will include a seminar with Introductory remarks about Carl Linnaeus by the Swedish Ambassador to Canada Ingrid Iremark, a presentation on Peter Kalms travels in Canada and the Niagara Falls, a lecture by Dr Heidi Hansson about the Influence of Carl Linnaeus on the Image of Sweden as well as a lecture by Niagara Parks Commission Chief Naturalist Robert Ritchie on Conservation and Environmental work performed by the Niagara Parks Commission
