Little Sweden - Marylebone

Marylebone is a mostly residential area in central London, just north of Oxford Circus. It’s known for it’s many good restaurants and beautiful green squares. What might be less known, is that Marylebone is the home of “Little Sweden”.

When the Swedish Church in London moved from Wapping to Harcourt Street in Marylebone in 1911, the Swedish cultural influence in the neighbourhood was minimal. But ever since, Sweden has made it’s presence more and more visible.

Today, within a block’s distance, you can find both the Swedish Embassy (in the area since the early 1980’s) and the tourist board; Visit Sweden, have lunch at the Swedish pub (The Harcourt Arms), go grocery shopping in the Totally Swedish shop and have dinner at the Swedish restaurant, Garbo’s.

Other Swedish institutions, including the Trade Council and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce, have also moved in, and more recent residents include the Swedish Hästens beds on Crawford Street and design stores such as Skandium (Marylebone High Street) and Design House Stockholm (Selfridges).

Today many young Swedes choose to settle down in the area, especially when first arriving to London.
