The Schengen Agreement

As of 25 March 2001 Sweden became a full participant in Schengen cooperation. This means that people are able to move freely between the countries that are members of Schengen. Schengen also means increased cooperation in fighting international crime and cooperation at the external borders. Schengen cooperation can affect you in several ways – chiefly if you are going to travel.

Under the Schengen Agreement the following countries have opened their borders to one another:

Austria
Belgium
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Iceland
Italy
Luxembourg
the Netherlands
Norway
Portugal
Spain
Sweden

New member states as of December 21, 2007:

Czech Republic
Estonia
Hungary
Latvia
Lithuania
Malta
Poland
Slovakia
Slovenia

A visa issued for a visit to one of these countries is normally valid in all of the other countries as well. Only in exceptional cases can a person be granted a visa that is valid in one country only.
