Municipal twinning speeds up housing delivery in township

The twin-town cooperation between Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Göteborg has helped speed up the delivery of houses to the poor in Motherwell, a township near Port Elizabeth.

A Swedish and a South African architect have designed subsidy houses for poor families in Motherwell, as part of the twinning partnership between Göteborg and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

The houses are built close together to make the installation of water, sanitation and electricity cost-effective and create a sense of neighbourhood and security.

"It's a sad situation for the homeless, but the increased capacity that has come out of the partnership with Göteborg has helped us speed up the delivery of houses," says Councillor Nancy Sihlwayi, chair of the housing and land portfolio and member of the management committe of the partnership between Nelson Mandela Bay and Göteborg.
