Municipal twinning

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, funds partnerships between Swedish and South African municipalities through the North-South programme.

The programme is managed by SALA-IDA, the International Development Agency of the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.

Partnership programmes are currently in place between the following regions and municipalities in Sweden and South Africa:

  • Gävle and Buffalo City;
  • Göteborg and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality;
  • Karlskrona and Atteridgeville/Tshwane;
  • Karlstad and Emthanjeni;
  • Kronoberg County Council and Potchefstroom City Council/Tlokwe;
  • Kronoberg County Administrative Board and North West Province;
  • Oskarshamn and Hibiscus Coast;
  • Kalmar Regional Council and Cape Winelands District Municipality;
  • Southern Småland and Potchefstroom/Tlokwe;
  • Sundsvall and the City of Johannesburg;
  • Söderhamn and Ugu;
  • Södertälje and Makana;
  • Tibro and George Municipality;
  • Värnamo and Sol Plaatje;
  • Växjö Municipality and Tlokwe City Council; and
  • Östersund and Alfred Nzo.

LODLOG

Another part of the cooperation is LODLOG, Local Democracy and Local Government, a course targeting mayors and city managers in South African municipalities.

The aim is to support South Africa's democratisation process by strengthening the participants' knowledge and understanding of local democracy and local government.The South African Local Government Association, SALGA, is responsible for the running of the programme.
