Culture

A partnership programme to promote cultural exchange between Sweden and South Africa was established in 2004. The two countries are jointly funding and managing the programme.

The aim is to promote and develop sustainable relations between South Africa and Sweden through support to joint projects in the culture sector.

The programme is committed to the overall goal of Swedish-South African development cooperation, to help poor people improve their quality of life. This includes promoting freedom of access to information and freedom of expression as well as strengthening the capacity of cultural institutions.

The South African Department of Arts and Culture and the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs are responsible for the management and administration of the programme.

Currently some 20 projects are taking place in fields such as visual and performing arts, cultural heritage, music and literature.

One example of a partnership project is the collaboration between the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the Stockholm Stadsteater in Sweden. Read more in the brochure "Crossing Boundaries", available in the column to the right.

Application criteria:

  • All cultural areas, such as performing arts, visual arts, literature, film and cultural heritage, are eligible for funding.
  • Registered organisations, foundations or other associations involved in cultural activities may apply. Individuals may not apply.
  • The applicant needs to have a partner organisation in the other country. If that is not the case, the partnership programme can assist in trying to link applicants with relevant partners.
  • Projects may vary in length, but must not exceed three years.
