Visa for Visiting Friends or Relatives

When applying for a visa to visit friends or relatives in Sweden, you must submit all of the following documents, which are written in Swedish or English:
  • One completed application form for Schengen Visa (can be downloaded in the right hand column of this page). They are also available at the Embassy

  • Passport or other travel document with a Japanese residence/re-entry permit attached in the current valid passport. The passport and your Japanese residence/re-entry permit should be valid for at least 3 months longer than the validity of the visa applied for

  • One photograph size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, must not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

  • Appendix D: Family Appendix for Applicants

  • Appendix E.
    (Additional written invitation is preferable)

  • "Personbevis" (proof of identity) from the reference person (the person you intend to visit) in Sweden. This can be obtained from their nearest local tax office or from the website of the Swedish National Tax Authorities (Skatteverket). If the reference person is not a citizen of Sweden, a copy of his/her Swedish residence permit is also required as well as a copy of his/her passport

  • Applicant's current certificate of employment or studies

  • Employment certificate from the reference person (the person you intend to visit) or other information (copy of bank-book, salary statement or the like) verifying that funds for the stay are available. If costs for the visit are to be borne by applicant, financial proofs have to be submitted (bank statement, extract from bank book or the like)

  • A valid, personal travel insurance which covers costs for
    – emergency treatment by a doctor
    – urgent ambulance transportation
    – transportation back to applicant's home country, if required for medical reasons

    The insurance must cover at least 30,000 Euro and be valid in all Schengen states and cover the total length of stay

  • Flight confirmation or air tickets

  • Parental consent is required for minors

  • Non-refundable application fee: JPY 7,600. Children under the age of six are free

  • Self-addressed "Ex-pack 500" envelope if you want to have your passport returned by mail. The "Ex-pack 500" is available in convenience stores and post offices. Please note that the Embassy does not bear responsibility for any delay or losses caused by the postal service or any other courier services.

Your entry visa must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden.
