Peter Bjorn and John: Swedish Pop Brilliance

The Swedish pop trio Peter Bjorn and John catapulted into the international spotlight with their third full-length album and one of the biggest indie hits of 2006.

The Stockholm-based threesome formed in 1999 and emerged as a favorite on the Swedish indie scene, loosely connected to bands such as The Concretes and Shout Out Louds.  Their eponomous debut album, released in 2002, revealed a playful sense of melody with breezy yet clever arrangements, often evoking the pop sounds of Elvis Costello.  The album got the attention of British indie institution Rough Trade, who proclaimed that "nothing else sounds as good in Swedish pop right now."

Their sophomore effort, Falling Out, expanded the band's sound into slightly darker and more elaborate territory, and led to a U.S. release in 2004.

Writer's Block, the group's third full-length, has solidified their position in the indie rock firmament.  Hailed by Pitchfork and NME as one of the best releases of 2006, the album broke major ground with the peppy single "Young Folks," featuring the coy vocals of Victoria Bergsman, formerly of The Concretes.

Peter Bjorn and John are currently on a global tour, playing sold-out shows in New York on January 29 and 30 before continuing on to Los Angeles on February 1.  They will also perform live on the nationally televised Late Night with Conan O'Brien on January 29.
