Getting Around Downtown

Increasing traffic congestion and the environmental pollution caused by vehicles are two of the most important challenges facing urban policy makers today. Sweden was one of the first countries to recognize many of these issues, and to include them on the government agenda.

During this conference on improving urban transportation, some of the most exciting examples from Sweden will be highlighted: the Stockholm trial implementation of a congestion tax, Stockholm Public Transport’s agenda to be fossil free by 2025, and success stories from the city of Gothenburg. The conference will also include presentations of projects and good practices from around Europe and the U.S., including the European Commission CIVITAS initiative and the New York BRT project.

This conference, hosted by the Embassy of Sweden and the Swedish Trade Council, will provide an excellent opportunity for transportation officials from every level to exchange information, and to learn more about actions that could be taken on a national, regional and local level to improve urban mobility and the environment.

Key speakers include Tyler Duval, Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation; Hans Rode, Head of Department Development at the Swedish Road Administration and William W. Millar, President of the American Public Transportation Association.
