Travelling information for romanian citizens

Romana - member of the European Union since January 1st, 2007

Information for Romanian citizens:

Right of residence instead of Residence permit

The right of free movement, residence and permanent residence is granted to citizens of the European Union on Swedish territory.

Residence permit is no longer required for visits to Sweden shorther than 3 months under the following circumstances:
   a) carrying out of dependent or independent activities such as employment, studies
   b) means of support including medical insurance
   c) family reunification with an European Union citizen who comply with the above conditions

For visits longer than 3 months, European Union citizens are obliged to present themselves and register their residence at the nearest territorial branch of the Swedish Migration Board.

Working permit is no longer required

For visits longer than 3 months European Union citizens are obliged to present themselves and register their residence at the nearest territorial branch of the Swedish Migration Board.

Thus, no residence or work permit are required for Romanian citizens before arriving to Sweden and registration of residence can be made upon arrival to Sweden.

However, note that this does not apply for citizens of a 3rd country residing in Romania unless they are subject to family reunification to an EU-citizen residing in Sweden. In this case, an application for a residence card can be made upon arrival to Sweden.

Required travel documents

As of July 2nd 2007 Sweden accepts  the Romanian ID card as a valid travel document. Therefore,  as of this date Romanian citizens can enter Sweden based on their national ID cards or their valid passports.
