Venice Commission

The European Commission for Democracy through Law, better known as the Venice Commission, started its work in 1990. It is composed of independent legal experts and helps particularly the newer member states in drafting constitutions which live up to the Council of Europe’s fundamental principles.

The Venice Commission works for example with the following issues: the protection of the rights of national minorities in Croatia; the installation of a human rights defender in Armenia; the reform of the constitutions in Ukraine and Liechtenstein and the drafting of a constitution in the Chechen Republic (Russian Federation).
