Swedish Industry

The Swedish industrial sector is characterized by very great breadth in terms of production and international operations. Internationally successful companies are found in practically all branches of industry, from mining products and other commodities to information technology (IT) and other high-tech sectors.

Another typical feature of Swedish industry is its heavy dependence on exports. More than half of everything manufactured in Sweden is exported. Traditionally, the Swedish business sector has been commodity-based. Although the supply of indigenous commodities is still an important element of Swedish industry, the main competitive factor of today is knowledge and the flexible use of existing tangible and intangible resources. In recent years Swedish industry, like industry in most other industrialized countries, has been characterized by rapid restructuring and adjustment to new international conditions. Ever more intensive international competition, combined with freer markets, has led many companies to reassess their entire organization.
