Work in Sweden

You must have a work permit in order to work in Sweden. Once you have been granted a permit, it must be entered into your passport before your arrival.

If the offer of work is for more than three months you will also require a Swedish residence permit.

If you will stay in Sweden for less than three months, you will not require a residence permit. You may, however, require an entry visa. Information about which citizens are required to have entry visas and more information on visas is found on the page 'Visa for visiting Sweden'.

Applying for a work permit

Please note once your application has been submitted to the Embassy you are not allowed to enter Sweden until a decision has been made.

Requirements for a work permit
(All documents must be written in English or in Swedish)

  • One completed application form (149011)

  • Valid passport and a copy of the picture page.

  • Two [2] photographs of passport style and size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

    Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

Requirements for family members

Each family member must apply for a residence permit separately.


  • Valid passport and one copy of the picture page

  • An application form ''Application by co-applicants'' or 
    ''Application from children under 18''

  • Two photographs of passport style and size (35 x 45 mm)

  • A certificate of your family registration, for Japanese people: Koseki tohon with its translation

  • A certificate showing how the family members will finance their stay in Sweden and proof (bank statement or certificate from the company), e.g. - guarantee letter from the main applicant with signature.
    The required amount is 3,000SEK/month for accompanying spouse and 1,800SEK/month per child.

Your residence permit must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden. 

Where do I apply?

The first time you apply for a work permit, you do so at the Swedish Embassy or Consulate in your country of origin or in your country of domicile.
