Residence permit for visiting relatives

If you are planning to go to Sweden to stay with a close relative for more than 90 days, you should apply for a residence permit before you go to Sweden. You can apply for a residence permit at the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai. You can be granted a residence permit for a visit for up to 12 months. A short interview will be held when you hand in your application at the Consulate General. You therefore need to apply in person.

When the Consulate General has all the necessary documentation, your case will be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board. The Swedish Migration Board is the decision-making authority in your case. If you are granted residence permit it will be entered into your passport.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms;

  • Two passport size photos (The photos must be: Full face (facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera); In colour with a light background; No more than six months old and resemble you; You must be bareheaded, unless you have special religious reasons.) ;

  • A valid passport and two copies of the identity page of the passport. Please note that even if you are not yet a holder of a valid passport it is possible to apply for a residence permit. You can forward your passport to the Consulate General later.

  • Non-Chinese applicants must provide a valid Chinese residence permit;

  • Notary Certificate (legalised by the Foreign Affairs Office - FAO) stating the relationship of you and the person in Sweden, both in English and Chinese, one original and one copy;

  • Two copies of the identity page of the passport of the relative in Sweden;

  • Two copies of your relative's Civil Registration Certificate, "personbevis";

  • Financial guarantee;

  • Letter of invitation from your relative in Sweden in English or Swedish;

  • You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded;

  • Power of Attorney (See information to the right).

If you fail to supply the necessary documents mentioned above, the decision-making process of your case may be delayed. The Consulate General may call you for additional documents or information if necessary.
