Japan, Sweden and the Northern Europe Market

Japan is the world’s second largest economy, with Tokyo having the highest purchasing power per square metre in the world. The Japanese industry boasts a vast number of high-tech companies, but with the domestic market not being sufficient any longer due to an aging population in combination with a thinning product pipeline, Japanese companies are increasingly looking at overseas markets for expansion, business collaboration, and technology sourcing. This is directly reflected in a drastic increase in Japanese FDI.

Northern Europe is a rapidly expanding region, both with regards to GDP and consumer purchasing power, and an increasing number of Japanese companies find Sweden to be an ideal base for expansion into this region. Many companies also find Sweden to be an excellent gateway into continental Europe as well. Furthermore, Sweden has proven to be an outstanding country for technology sourcing given the abundant flow of new technologies from universities and science parks.

All of this has lead to an increase in collaboration between corporations in Japan and companies and research facilities in Sweden. Today, Sweden attracts almost 50 percent of total foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region.

Ideal triple-helix model

In Sweden, industry (companies/investors), academia (univer- sities/research organizations), and government (legislature/ politicians/local government) are working together very closely, with an established system in place to incubate, commercialize, and market new products and technologies efficiently. Also, joint crossover academic research is actively pursued.
