Jenny Lind Tree Ceremony in Battery Park

Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, adored in Europe and the U.S. during the mid-19th century for her exquisite soprano voice and expressive role interpretations, will be honored at a ceremony in Battery Park on November 2, 2005.

A seedling American linden tree was planted in Battery Park on November 2, 1995, by American Landmark Festivals and its director, Francis L. Heilbut, along with Swedish Consul General Dag Sebastian Ahlander and Commissioner Henry Stern of the New York City Department of Parks, in honor of legendary Swedish singer Jenny Lind, near the site of her sensational American debut at the park's Castle Garden in 1850.

Now, on the Jenny Lind Tree’s tenth anniversary, American Landmark Festivals will host a celebration in the presence of Ambassador Kjell Anneling, Consul General of Sweden, featuring musical performances as well as readings and tributes to Jenny Lind by various guest speakers.

The event will take place at the Jenny Lind Tree site near Castle Clinton in Battery Park at 2:30 pm on November 2. The commemoration is open to the general public.

Jenny Lind rose from modest beginnings to become one of the most celebrated performers of the 19th century.  Her first New York appearance, presented by the one and only P.T. Barnum, was one of the most sensational concerts of all time.
