Paintings and Drawings by Gustaf Tenggren at Illustration House

The paintings and drawings of Swedish illustrator Gustaf Tenggren are on display at Illustration House in New York City from September 30 to October 28, 2005.

Millions of children have experienced the work of illustrator Gustaf Tenggren (1896-1970) in children's books like The Poky Little Puppy, Disney's Pinocchio, and hundreds of other films, books and magazines.  Nevertheless, his recognition as an artist has been largely neglected. His early masterworks - for example Bland Tomtar och Troll - are virtually unknown in America. Through a long and ever-renewing career marked by radical shifts in style, mood and technique, Tenggren was a major figure in 20th-century illustration.

Illustration House now presents Tenggren's first exhibition and sale in 80 years. Since the bulk of his artwork is archived at the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minneapolis and at Disney Studios, it's rarely seen by the general public and scarce to the art collector. The exhibit will present the artist's wide scope of over forty years of work exploring the boundaries between realism and cartooning, darkness and light, satire and wonder.
