Five Questions for Sara Jangfeldt

Swedish jazz singer Sara Jangfeldt is headlining Parkerfest – a celebration of the life of poet Dorothy Parker – with two performances in New York: at the cabaret club Don't Tell Mama on September 30, 2005, and at the Algonquin Hotel on October 2, 2005. We asked Sara five questions and got five answers that will leave you yearning to find out more about these two interesting women...

Who is Dorothy Parker and why is she relevant today?

Dorothy Parker is relevant today because she is a modern and strong woman whose sarcasm still encourages bravery and wit.  She was completely ahead of her time and is totally right on today.

How did you get the idea for the performance Enough Rope?

I started reading Parker in high school, but didn't come up with the idea to write a stage show until a few years later.  I realized that the music itself spoke volumes, the movement, the wit.  All biographical text seemed superfluous.  I wanted to let the audience imagine the rest for themselves.

What can we expect from Enough Rope at Parkerfest?
Enough Rope at Parkerfest will be like playing at home.  I will sing for an audience who knows the poems but has never heard them performed this way.  A physical and lyrical monologue with a predilection for rope.

What are you hoping Parkerfest will lead to?

I hope that my first performances will lead to more.  Parker belongs in America, and in New York in particular.

Is there an interest for Dorothy Parker in Sweden?
Parker has a small but dedicated group of sisters of all ages, with [Swedish journalist] Linda Skugge in the lead.  I do everything I can to pass on the message!
