Garmarna, Hoven Droven and Väsen: Swedish Folk Music at Satalla

Beginning on September 22, 2005, the New York music venue Satalla presents a concert series featuring three innovative Swedish folk music groups: Garmarna, Hoven Droven and Väsen.

The music of Garmarna is simultaneously modern, traditional and spellbindingly unique.  Their evocative blend of ancient instrumentation, sampled drum loops, suggestive mouth harps, graceful violins and distorted guitars make for "unforgettable listening experience," according to Billboard Magazine.

Swedish folk revivalists Hoven Droven specialize in a high-energy mix of traditional folk and fierce hard rock.  With saxophone, fiddle, electric guitar, and a driving rhythm section of bass and drums, they interpret traditional Swedish folk melodies with rock'n'roll intensity and brilliant musicianship.

The acoustic ensemble Väsen consists of a traditional nyckelharpa (a keyed fiddle unique to Sweden), viola, guitar and percussion.  The band's dense, complex arrangements are firmly planted in folk tradition, but weave together a wealth of influences to take on a swinging life of their own.
