Greta Garbo Centennial Celebration at Scandinavia House

Scandinavia House presents a unique photo exhibition and film retrospective, offering a rare glimpse into the public and private world of the legendary Swedish actress Greta Garbo.

Sweden's glamorous and famously enigmatic Greta Garbo epitomized Nordic beauty and allure for generations of filmgoers.  Celebrating the centennial of the birth of Greta Garbo on September 18, 1905, the exhibition provides an unusual opportunity to see original vintage prints of magnificent large-scale portraits from Garbo's private collection taken by some of the greatest photographers of the era.  Posters, lobby placards, magazines and other memorabilia will also be on view.  Garbo's Garbos is organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and is curated by Robert Dance.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Scandinavia House also presents the film retrospective Forever Garbo, featuring her early Swedish and silent films, Hollywood blockbusters, as well as some of the teenage Garbo's very first film appearances.

The Museum of Modern Art will also screen two films as part of the Greta Garbo centennial celebration: Gösta Berlings saga (The Saga of Gösta Berling) and Die Freudlose Gasse (Joyless Street) on September 18-19, 2005.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service and Sweden Post will both issue a commemorative Greta Garbo stamp on September 23, 2005
