The Swedish Embassy in Vienna is at the same time working as a Permanent Mission to the United Nations' Organizations in Vienna. You can read more about the Mission's work here.
Sweden is involved in the work of the UN in many different ways: First, Swedish experts and mediators are called upon to help resolve many conflicts. Sweden is also one of the countries that has provided most personnel for peacekeeping operations. Another way that the country involves itself in UN work is through heavy development assistance spending.
Sweden regards the UN as one of the foremost channels for influencing the international system and for creating and preserving peace. It assigns high priority to working with the UN. But like other countries, Sweden also believes that the organization should be reformed and adapted to meet the new needs that have arisen since it was founded.
In 1997-1998, for the third time since 1946, Sweden was a member of the UN's most important decision-making body, the Security Council. During this period Sweden worked to preserve the role of international law and the Security Council on issues related to international peace and security. The Swedish delegation was very active in Council work and especially emphasized the importance of conflict-prevention measures, more efficient peacekeeping operations and greater information on Council work for non-members.
