How to apply for a work permit in Sweden

You must have a work permit in order to work in Sweden. Once you have been granted a permit, it must be entered into your passport before your arrival.

If the offer of work is for more than three months you will also require a Swedish residence permit.

If you will be in Sweden for less than three months, you will not require a residence permit. You may, however, require an entry visa. Information about which citizens are required to have entry visas and more information on visas are found on the page 'Visa for visiting Sweden'.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms

  • Three [3] photographs of passport style and size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
    (facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera)
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

    Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

  • A valid passport and two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. Please also provide us your old passport, if any.

  • Two photocopies of your Household Register (Hukou Book), with all the pages with contents. Please bring the original Household Register when you come to the interview.

  • If you are employed by an institute or company in China, you should enclose a letter of introduction from this institute or company, as well as a copy of the letter. The letter should state your position at the institute or company, and should also include the address of your employer, contact person and telephone number. The letter must be signed.

  • A written "Offer of employment". The Offer of employment should be made on the appropriate form (AMS 101704) that your employer in Sweden can receive from the Employment Office.

    Important: The minimum salary required at present is SEK 13000 a month before tax.

  • Written documentation in English of your education and/or work experience and a photocopy of the said document.

You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee is currently 1150 RMB.

You should hand in your application in person to the Consulate at least 10 weeks before your departure to Sweden. If you fail to supply the necessary documents mentioned above, the decision-making process of your case may be delayed. The Consulate may call you for additional documents or information if necessary.
