How to apply for a residence permit as a co-applicant to a student

If you are planning to move to Sweden to live for a limited period of time with your husband/wife/ partner or child/parent who is studying in Sweden, you should apply for a residence permit before you go to Sweden.

You can apply for a residence permit at the Consulate General of Sweden in Guangzhou. You may be interviewed after you have presented your application. Your case will then be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board for decision.

The Consulate will inform you when the decision is ready. If you are granted residence permit it will be entered into your passport. You cannot travel to Sweden and wait for the decision there.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application:

If your husband/wife/partner is in Sweden:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.

  • Three [3] photographs of passport style and size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
    (facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera)
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

    Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application. For more information please see

  • A valid passport and two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. Please note that even if you are not yet a holder of a valid passport it is possible to apply for a residence permit. You can forward your passport to the Consulate later.

  • Notary Certificate of marriage (Chinese and English version) and a copy of the certificate. The notary must be authenticated by the local provincial Foreign Affairs Office. If you were married in Sweden, please hand in two copies of the Swedish marriage certificate (vigselbevis).

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of your husband's/wife's/partner's passport.

  • Two copies of your husband's/wife's/partner's Civil Registration Certificate, "personbevis".

  • A letter of invitation in original from your husband/wife/partner.

  • Information about financial guarantee in original. You should be able to show that you have 3 500 SEK per month in Sweden.

  • Letter of introduction in original from your current employer in China. This should state if you have been granted leave for the time you will be in Sweden, and it should be signed and have the telephone number of the person who signed it.


You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee is currently 1150 RMB.


For children (under 18 years old) with one or both parents in Sweden, or children accompanying a parent to Sweden:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms. The application should be signed by the person who has the legal custody of the child.

  • Three [3] photographs of passport style and size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
    (facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera)
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

    Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

  • Notary Certificate stating the relationship of the child/parents. The notary must be authenticated by the local provincial Foreign Affairs Office.

  • Notary Certificate stating who has the legal custody of the child and in case only one of the parents has the right of access to the child. The notary must be authenticated by the local provincial Foreign Affairs Office.

  • If one of the child's parents will stay in China, a Notary Certifiace of a letter from him/her is requested stating that he/she is aware of the child's application for residence permit and that he/she agrees that the child goes to Sweden. The notary must be authenticated by the local provincial Foreign Affairs Office.

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of the passport of the parent/s.

  • Two copies of the Civil Registration Certificate, "personbevis", of the parent/s.

  • Letter of invitation from the parent in Sweden.

  • Financial guarantee. (Should be at least 1 800 SEK per month in Sweden.)

  • Letter of introduction in original from the school in China. This should state if the school has granted leave for the time the child will be in Sweden, and must be signed and have the telephone number of the person who signed it.

You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee for children under 18 years old is currently 580 RMB.

If you planning to live with your child or other relatives in Sweden:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.

  • Three [3] photographs of passport style and size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
    (facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera)
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

    Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee is currently 1 150 RMB.

If you fail to supply the necessary documents mentioned above, the decision-making process of your case may be delayed. The Consulate may call you for additional documents or information if necessary.
