Residence Permit for Studying in Sweden

If you are planning to study at university or college in Sweden for a period longer than three months you must have a residence permit. If you have a residence permit for studies at university in Sweden, you are entitled to work without work permit in Sweden. Your residence permit must be entered into your passport before your arrival in Sweden. You should leave Sweden after you have finished your studies. Even if you have been studying in Sweden for several years you can normally not get a permanent residence permit to settle down in Sweden. Please note that you are NOT required to apply for residence permit through any agency. You should apply yourself and come to the Consulate General to apply in person.

If the Consulate finds it necessary, you will be summoned to a personal interview, in which case the Consulate will contact you. Your application will be forwarded to the Migration Board in Sweden. When the decision has been made in your case, the Consulate will inform you of the decision.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application:

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.
Please note that if your spouse or child is going with you, fill out the application form for co-applicants.

  • Three [3] photographs of passport style and size [35 x 45 mm] for all applicants, including minors. Your photograph must be:
    – colour photo
    – recent and of true likeness
    – showing full face
(facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera)
    – taken without headgear
    – head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not cover any portion of the applicant's face
    – taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background

Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

  • A valid passport and two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. If the passport is issued in order to replace your old passport, please also provide the old one.

  • A letter of admission from VHS (Verket för högskoleservice) or a letter of acceptance from the university/college where you are going to carry out full time study or research work, and a photocopy of the letter. Those who first wish to study language and join another university or college later are required to enclose a letter of acceptance and confirmation letter from both the language school AND the university.

  • If you are employed by an institute or company in China, you should enclose a letter of introduction from this institute or company, as well as a copy of the letter. The letter should state your position at the institute or company, and should also include the address of your employer, contact person and telephone number.

  • Bank statement. The sum requested is at present 7300 SEK/month for 10 months per year. You must be able to show that you have enough money for your upkeep throughout the whole period of your stay in Sweden. These money has to be in your own bank account and you should be able to access them on your own.

  • You are required to pay an application fee when you hand in your application. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The application fee is currently 1150 RMB.

  • For non-Chinese applicants: valid Chinese residence permit.

  • If you will study less than one year, you must have a comprehensive health insurance covering the entire period with an amount of 30 000 €.

Note: You should hand in your application to the Consulate at least 10 weeks before your departure to Sweden.

If you fail to supply the necessary documents mentioned above, the decision-making process of your case may be delayed. The Consulate may call you to ask for additional documents or information if necessary.
