Student in Sweden

Foreign students can enroll at Swedish universities and university colleges. Some courses are taught in English, but the majority are taught in Swedish and require a high degree of fluency. To qualify for such studies, the foreign student must take the "Test i svenska för universitetsstudier" (TISUS), which is administered each August at major Swedish universities. Applicants also need to meet the admission requirements for the particular course of study they wish to pursue.

Students applying for graduate school or research must establish contact with, or receive an invitation from, the university department or research institution where they intend to study.

The deadline for most of the study programs in Sweden is December 1st for the following academic year. However, an earlier application is encouraged since several steps are involved, including an application for residence permit, which can be obtained from the Consulate General.

All Swedish universities have their own websites providing useful information. A list of these can be obtained from Högskoleverket (Nat'l Agency for Higher Education) at www.hsv.se.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation also has an excellent website on studies in Scandinavia at
www.amscan.org

You could also check out the Swedish Institute's site: www.si.se.

Travel grants for research trips are granted to qualified American citizens with well-developed projects in the fields of politics, public administration, mass media, business and industry, working life, human environment, education and culture. Grants of up to SEK 25.000 (=ca $3.000) are awarded to support two-to-four week research trips to Sweden. The deadline for applications is the first Friday of February. Application forms are available from the Swedish Information Service at www.webcom.com/sis/study.html.
