Marriage in New York

The Consulate General of Sweden in New York does not arrange or officiate wedding ceremonies but Swedish citizens may get married at the Church of Sweden in New York or at the Office of the City Clerk.

Before getting married in New York, whether in a religious or civil ceremony, you must first obtain a marriage license from the New York City Marriage Bureau at The Office of the City Clerk.

The marriage license is issued immediately upon application in person by both parties at The Office of the City Clerk.  Applicants must bring passports or some other form of identification.  The marriage license must be paid for a money order and is normally valid for 60 days.  The Office of the City Clerk also performs civil marriage ceremonies, as soon as 24 hours after the marriage license has been issued.  No appointment is needed for either the marriage license application or the actual marriage ceremony.  All couples wait in line and are simply received in the order in which they arrived.

To get married at the Church of Sweden in New York, you must be a member of the Church of Sweden.  You should contact the pastor by telephone and schedule the wedding ceremony well in advance.
