Residence permit for visiting relatives

If you are planning to go to Sweden to stay with a close relative for more than 90 days, you should apply for a residence permit before you go to Sweden. You can apply for a residence permit at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing. You can be granted a residence permit for a visit for up to 12 months. You will be contacted by the Embassy for an interview at a later stage.

Visa for visiting friends or relatives

When the Embassy has all the necessary documentation, your case will be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board. The Swedish Migration Board is the decision-making authority in your case. When the Migration Board in Sweden has made a decision in your case they will produce a residence permit card for you and send it to the Embassy. When the Embassy receives your card you will be contacted to come pick up your permit. You cannot travel to Sweden and wait for the decision there.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application (note that all documents need to be submitted in original and a copy of the original document)

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.

  • Two fully completed and signed Family details forms.

  • Two passport photos taken within the past six months -
    Photos that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. We only accept passports which have been signed by the holder of the passport.

  • Notary Certificate stating the relationship of you and the person in Sweden, both in English and Chinese, one original and one copy.

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of the passport of the relative in Sweden. 

  • Two photocopies of your relative's Civil Registration Certificate, "personbevis". 

  • Financial guarantee.

  • Letter of invitation from your relative in Sweden.

  • You are required to pay an application fee. If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded. The fee is 1015 RMB for adults and 505 RMB for children under 18 years of age. The Embassy will only accept card payment. Please observe: cash payment can only be accepted, when card payment is not possible.

If you fail to supply the necessary documents mentioned above, the decision-making process of your case may be delayed. The Embassy may call you for additional documents or information if necessary.
