Swedish Development Co-operation with Jordan

The Swedish development cooperation to the MENA region is channelled through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Jordan benefits from the cooperation via four different programmes;

  • Contract-financed technical cooperation (bilateral),
  • Credits (bilateral),
  • Democracy. human rights, culture and media (regional),
  • Training courses (regional).

Contract-financed technical cooperation
This programme aim at enhancing managerial and technical skills in partner countries and cover subjects of strategic importance to economic and social development. Sida and Jordan jointly finance contracts between public institutions and organisations and Swedish experts in order to develop knowledge and methods Some ongoing or recently finalized ones are;

  • As-Samra Waste Water Treatment Plant,
  • Establishing Geographic Information System (National Electricity Power Company, NEPCO),
  • Strategic Environmental Development for Aqaba Special Economic Zone.

Credits
Development loans are loans on very favourable terms. Sida has approved a credit for the As-Samra project.

Democracy, human rights, culture and media
Sweden, through Sida, supports regional initiatives with participation by as many countries in the region as possible. These may i.e. involve training in human rights, or support for the legal system or the rights of women and children. NGOs are eligible for support. Some ongoing projects are:

  • Juvenile justice (UNICEF and Penal Reform International),
  • Seminar on Ombudsman experiences in the Arab region.
